placecells.bluishmedia is a Beta version of an experimental travelogue archive, pared down to a date, a coordinate, and a sound. A place cell is a neuron, found mainly in the hippocampus, that fires only when you are in one particular place in space. Memory, it is thought, is closely bound to this map in the brain. From that insight, this site was born: a search for a new form of the travelogue.
Every pinned place has been visited in person by the editors and writers at bluishmedia. Each record is, at its core, a map coordinate and its ambient sound—at times accompanied by a few words, a photo, or a video. Words and visual information are incomplete and transient, while a coordinate and a sound seem to stay closer to what was there in that moment. Each record is also timestamped on the blockchain by OpenTimestamps, a trace of the moment passing through. The maps here are two: Earth, the whole world, and Hokkaido, the northern-most island of Japan, a place visited often enough to deserve its own. Open an entry and press play — for a moment, you may be there too.
